For many Memphis residents, FedEx represents more than a job. It represents years of service, financial stability, retirement savings, and the expectation of a secure future. When layoffs happen, employees understandably focus on their next paycheck, health insurance, and finding new employment. But there is another important financial consideration that deserves attention: What happens to your FedEx 401(k), pension, and retirement benefits when your employment ends? Whether you have been laid off, accepted a separation package, or are considering retirement, understanding your benefits can help you avoid unnecessary taxes, penalties, and costly financial decisions. At Women Financial Power, we help individuals and families understand their retirement options and make informed decisions about their financial future.
FedEx, one of Memphis’s largest employers, has undergone workforce adjustments and operational restructuring in recent years.
On August 27, 2025, FedEx Supply Chain notified the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development of plans to permanently lay off 611 employees at two Memphis facilities.
The affected locations were:
According to the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing, the layoffs were scheduled for October 11, 2025.
FedEx explained that the reductions were connected to a customer transitioning a significant portion of its operations to another third-party logistics provider.
The company also indicated that some affected employees could qualify for other positions within FedEx or receive assistance related to job placement, relocation, or severance, depending on eligibility.
In April 2026, the Memphis Business Journal also reported that FedEx had confirmed additional position eliminations as part of its broader restructuring efforts.

While corporate restructuring can create uncertainty, employees who have accumulated retirement savings during their careers still have important financial decisions to make.
Understanding those decisions is a critical part of protecting what you have worked to build.

One of the most common questions employees ask after leaving FedEx is:
“Do I lose my 401(k) if I get laid off?”
Generally, no.
The money you contributed to your 401(k), along with any vested employer contributions and associated investment earnings or losses, remains yours after leaving the company.
However, separating from employment may change how you manage, access, or transfer those funds.
Depending on your account balance, plan provisions, financial circumstances, and retirement goals, you may have several options.
Depending on your account balance and the retirement plan’s rules, you may be able to leave your money in your existing FedEx 401(k).
This option allows your retirement savings to remain invested within the employer-sponsored plan without immediately triggering a taxable withdrawal.
However, former employees should review available investment options, account fees, distribution rules, and ongoing account management.
Leaving your money in the plan may be appropriate for some individuals, but it is worth comparing that option with the alternatives.
Another option is transferring eligible retirement savings into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA).
An IRA rollover may provide access to different investments and retirement income strategies.
Depending on the financial institution and account selected, an IRA may offer:
A properly completed direct rollover from a traditional 401(k) to a traditional IRA generally does not trigger immediate federal income taxes.
However, fees, investment risks, withdrawal provisions, and other considerations should be evaluated before making a decision.
Important: An IRA rollover is not automatically better than keeping your money in your employer’s retirement plan.
If you find another job that offers a retirement plan, your new employer may allow you to transfer your previous 401(k) balance into its plan.
This can simplify retirement account management by keeping retirement assets together.
Before transferring funds, compare your new employer’s investment options, fees, withdrawal rules, and rollover eligibility requirements.
When facing a layoff, accessing retirement savings may seem like an immediate financial solution.
However, withdrawing money from your 401(k) can create significant tax consequences.
Traditional 401(k) withdrawals are generally subject to federal income taxes, and distributions taken before age 59½ may also be subject to an additional 10% federal tax unless an exception applies.
Certain employees who separate from service during or after the year they turn 55 may qualify for an exception to the additional 10% tax on eligible distributions from that employer’s qualified retirement plan.
That exception generally does not apply to distributions from an IRA.
Before cashing out your FedEx 401(k), understand the potential tax consequences and how the withdrawal could affect your long-term retirement income.
Some FedEx employees participate in pension arrangements in addition to, or instead of, certain employer retirement savings benefits.
Whether you have a pension depends on your FedEx operating company, employment history, eligibility, and applicable retirement plan.
If you have earned a vested pension benefit, leaving FedEx generally does not mean forfeiting that vested benefit.
However, the timing and form of payment may depend on the specific pension plan.
Depending on your plan and eligibility, your options may include:
Monthly pension payments: Certain pension benefits may be payable as regular retirement income, potentially for life.
Lump-sum distribution: Some pension arrangements may offer eligible participants the option to receive a lump-sum payment rather than periodic payments.
Deferred pension benefits: Depending on the plan, you may be able to leave your vested benefit in place and begin receiving payments at a later retirement date.
Not every option is available under every FedEx pension arrangement.
Before choosing a pension distribution, employees should request their benefit statement and review the options available through their specific plan.
A pension decision can affect retirement income, taxes, survivor benefits, and long-term financial security.
If your FedEx pension plan offers both options, this may be one of the most important financial decisions you face.
A monthly pension may provide predictable income throughout retirement, depending on the payment option selected.
A lump-sum payment may offer additional flexibility in how retirement assets are managed, invested, or distributed.
However, a lump sum also transfers responsibility for managing investment risk and retirement income to you.
Before selecting either option, consider:
The right decision depends on your overall financial circumstances and the specific benefits available under your plan.
For employees who have worked at FedEx for 20 or 30 years, an unexpected layoff may raise another question:
“Can I afford to retire instead of finding another job?”
The answer depends on more than your retirement account balance.
Before considering early retirement, evaluate how much income you will need each month and where that income will come from.
Your retirement income may include Social Security, pension payments, 401(k) withdrawals, IRA distributions, annuity income, or other savings and investments.
You should also consider healthcare expenses before Medicare eligibility, inflation, taxes, and how long your money may need to last.
At Women Financial Power, our retirement planning process focuses on helping clients understand how their existing financial resources may support their retirement goals.
A layoff can make retirement planning feel urgent, but not every financial decision needs to happen immediately.
Before moving your retirement funds, take time to understand what you own and what choices are available.
Start by gathering your most recent 401(k) statement, pension benefit statement, retirement plan documents, and separation paperwork.
Next, identify your immediate financial needs. These may include replacing lost income, maintaining health insurance, managing outstanding debt, or establishing an emergency fund.
Finally, evaluate whether your existing retirement savings are positioned appropriately for your age, financial obligations, and retirement timeline.
For individuals approaching retirement, protecting retirement assets from unnecessary losses may become an increasingly important consideration.
However, every investment and retirement strategy involves tradeoffs. Understanding those tradeoffs is essential before making changes.
